Undergraduate research from Reading the Middle Ages course with Dr. Teresa Russo will be presented online this month at Brock University with the support of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MARS). Students present their academic poster projects featuring the Medieval heroic and the chivalric periods in a class organized conference. Students are on panels of 2, 3, or 4 and will discuss their research in lightening rounds.
This year’s conference will explore the origins of sports in the Middle Ages to connect students to the preparation of the Canada Games as Niagara Region hosts the next Summer Canada Games.
Students will explore sports and consider tournaments or other sporting events in the Middle Ages. In some cases events and games are discussed in Old English and Middle English
texts, such as horse racing in Beowulf and Theseus’s tournament in Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, while textiles, ceramics, and murals depict sports of leisure, such as hunting and falconry, and those more competitive in certain countries in the West and East.
The conference, entitled The Origins of Sports and Games in the Middle Ages from East to West, will have 11 panels, meeting two separate evenings on March 18 and March 25. The Conference has been designated a Campus-Wide-Co-Curriculum (CWC) Event. Students can earn Experiencing BU credits on the transcripts.
